Jacobus tenBroek Library, National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute

Welcome to THE CANE TIP, the Database for Special Collections & Archives Finding Aids
at the Jacobus tenBroek Library

About this Database

Many -if not most- blind people use white canes at least some of the time. For the National Federation of the Blind, the white cane is both a recommended tool for exploring the environment and a symbol of the independence achieved with its proper use. The tip of a well-used cane will wear out fairly quickly, and blind cane users always keep a supply of cane tips. This database enables researchers to explore the environment of the tenBroek Library's archival and manuscript collections by providing access to our finding aids. We hope the tips you get from this database will facilitate your research at the tenBroek library.

Located in Baltimore at the NFB Jernigan Institute, the collections held by the tenBroek Library include the personal and professional papers of people significant to the blind, oral history interviews, and the institutional records of the NFB. Be aware that the database provides links only to descriptive information about the collections. All archival material must be viewed at the library and is not available online at this time.

Access to these collections is open to members of the National Federation of the Blind, to its employees, and to outside researchers regardless of their institutional affiliation. All visitors should make an appointment to visit the Library and must complete a registration form in order to have access to the NFB archival collections.
